CSR Intervention Projects

The CSR Cell at Karve Institute of Social Service, Pune, is committed to fostering sustainable development in Urban, Rural, and Tribal communities. By partnering with corporates, we collaboratively address diverse community needs in areas such as Quality Education, Healthcare, Skill Development and Livelihood, Women’s Empowerment, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Watershed Management, Strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutions, Agriculture Development, Environmental Conservation, and Waste Management.

Quality Education

Our Quality Education initiative in selected Zilha Parishad schools focuses on enhancing both educational quality and infrastructure. We conduct capacity-building sessions for teachers, establish e-learning setups, and implement BaLA (Building as Learning Aid) principles through school painting. To create a more engaging learning environment, we set up libraries and science labs while also undertaking necessary infrastructure repairs, such as classroom and toilet renovations. Additionally, we certify schools and ICDS centers that uphold high-quality standards, ensuring a continuous commitment to excellence and providing students with a supportive and inspiring space for learning.

Health

Our Health initiative, implemented through the Arogyasakhi Project, is committed to improving rural health, particularly for women, children, and adolescents. Through regular home visits for ANC (Antenatal Care) and PNC (Postnatal Care), supported by doctors, we ensure personalized care and monitoring for mothers and newborns. In collaboration with ASHA workers, we organize health camps, including basic check-ups, gynecological exams, HB and eye check-ups, to facilitate early detection and treatment. Additionally, we conduct awareness sessions on menstrual health and hygiene, nutrition, anemia, and kitchen gardening, fostering preventive care practices. Further initiatives, such as iron supplement distribution, healthy baby competitions, and baby kit distribution, contribute to a comprehensive approach to health in rural communities.

Skill Development And Livelihood

Our Skill Development and Livelihood initiative aims to empower youth, farmers, and tribal communities by providing training and resources to enhance their economic opportunities. For youth, we offer vocational courses like Tally with GST and MS-CIT, and support small-scale businesses such as footwear production, banjo making, and LED bulb assembly. In tribal communities, we promote sustainable livelihood options by implementing goat rearing projects and distributing fishing kits. These efforts are designed to equip individuals with the skills and tools needed for economic self-sufficiency, fostering long-term development across rural and tribal areas.

Women Empowerment

Our Women Empowerment initiative centers on forming and strengthening Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to foster economic independence and social cohesion. By linking SHGs with Umed (the Maharashtra State Rural Livelihoods Mission), we provide women with access to resources, training, and exposure visits to successful SHGs and Gram Sanghs, enhancing their skills and confidence. We support SHGs in launching small-scale businesses such as phenyl production, plate-making, masala and soap production, and operating rice hulling machines. These opportunities enable women to generate income, build entrepreneurial skills, and actively participate in their communities’ economic growth.

Drinking Water And Sanitation

Our Clean Water and Sanitation initiative prioritizes the health and hygiene of rural and tribal communities by improving access to safe drinking water. We distribute water filters to tribal families and have installed alkaline water plants in villages to enhance water quality. Additionally, we have undertaken repairs on local wells, constructed protective iron nets over wells, and laid pipelines to bring drinking water directly to villages. These efforts ensure a reliable supply of clean water, contributing to improved health outcomes and fostering sustainable hygiene practices in underserved areas.

Watershed Management

The Karve Institute of Social Service CSR Cell has been actively engaged in water conservation projects across multiple regions to address water scarcity and improve groundwater levels. Currently, we are working in partnership with Cummins India at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) in Pune, where we have rejuvenated a pond aimed at enhancing groundwater recharge and supporting the local ecosystem. Additionally, we are collaborating with Glenmark Life Sciences in the Mohol block of Solapur District on watershed interventions to promote sustainable water management practices. In recent years, our efforts have also extended to Pune, Satara, Sangli, Solapur, and Beed districts, where we have implemented various initiatives such as rejuvenating ponds/Lakes, Desiltation, CCT, rainwater harvesting and community awareness programs, making a lasting impact on water availability and sustainability for communities across Maharashtra..

Panchayat Raj Strengthening

Our Panchayatraj Project recognizes the Gram Panchayat as a cornerstone for sustainable village development, leveraging its potential to access various government schemes and funding for comprehensive growth. Through this project, we aim to empower key village leaders, including Gram Panchayat members, Gramsevaks, and SHG members, by organizing exposure visits to model villages and conducting workshops and training sessions to build their capacity. Additionally, we have facilitated ISO certification for Gram Panchayats, helping them adopt best practices in governance. As a result, these empowered Panchayats are well-positioned to lead development across multiple sectors, with some achieving recognition as Smart Gram Panchayats for their impactful contributions to village advancement.
