Background

The project of integrated rural development at Kharade village, Shahapur, Thane was started as CSR Initiative of Mazagon Dock shipbuilders Ltd, Mumbai in collaboration with CSR cell of Karve Institute Of Social Service, Pune. Project initiated with the baseline of the village in February 2015 and studied the needs, issues & areas of intervention by applying various people’s participatory tools & techniques of social work methodology. Kharade is spread across 10 hamlets (Padas) in total and 4 Katkariwadis.  The total number of households covered in the survey were 424 with a population of 2349 i.e. 78.09% of the total population of the village. As per 2011 census data the total population of Kharade was 3008.

On the completion of the Baseline survey, CSR cell analysed the gathered data & developed a detailed report as a strategic village development plan for 3 years (2015-2018). This holistic village development plan included almost all sectors such as education, health, livelihood, drinking water, sanitation, waste management etc. After rigorous discussions, village visits & brainstorming, the MOU was signed in December 2015 & the project was inaugurated on 29th December 2015 by Former Chairman & managing director, Shri. R.K.Shrawat & Shri.V.Giriraj, Chief secretary Rural development, Maharashtra. After completion of successful implementation in 2018, got an extension of more 2 years till Dec 2020.

Goal and Objectives of the VDP

Village adoption projects envisage a village where the opportunities are available to improve the quality of life of villagers & attain holistic development of the village.

Broad Objectives of the project:

  • To improve quality of education and minimise the retention among the students

  • To channelize the talent and the energy of youths by providing skilled based trainings & support to attain livelihood opportunities

  • To make people aware about the measures of health and make existed health services more efficient

  • To attain women empowerment through providing them trainings specific to income generation and improve financial literacy among them

  • To catalyse the Government initiatives and people’s participation in the process of holistic development of the village

  • To Improve accessibility of the villagers towards safe drinking water

  • To encourage farmers to adopt organic farming & environmental friendly practices to improve productivity of the crops

Project Achievements: 

Health: 

  • Project has Eight Trained Arogyasakhis, 

  • Kishori Manch Program for Adolescents: 9 groups covering 183 adolescent girls

  • Maternal and Child Health Programs

  • Health Checkup camps - 500 villagers, 600 adolescent girls covered

  • 74 families, 10 schools and 7 anganwadies participated in kitchen garden development

  • Reduction in newborn babies with low birth weight (from 17% to 11%)​

Livelihood Project: (Women empowerment)

  • Quilt Making: 16 women - 2100 quilts, quilt making shop established, online trading started, Urja’s website launched, products exported with US based company

  • Cloth Bag: as byproduct introduced, 24 women involved

  • Urja SHG Group was honoured with the Block Level First Prize “Rajmata Jijau Swavalamban Award - 2019”.

  • Sakhi Sobati - Sanitary Pads Manufacturing Project

  • Around 10,000 sanitary pads manufactured

  • 12 women received financial support

  • Mushroom Cultivation Project: Rejuvenation of dysfunctional 3 units from Shahapur

  • Received solar support for cultivation shed from agriculture department

  • Livestock Development: Conduct vaccination camps and support government check up with medicines​

Education:

  • E-Learning set up installation, beautification of school, teacher’s training, ISO certification

  • Super Ten Project: MDL Sponsoring overall education of 25 children at Bhosala Military School, Nagpur.

  • Support for ITI of Tribal Girls: Basic Needs of Toilet & drinking water availability for girls ITI. This also contributing to improve the intake of students & introduction of one more trade for course from government ​

Sanitation: 

  • Supported 44 individual toilets under Swach Bharat Abhiyan.

  • 4 toilet blocks construction and repairing of 12 toilet blocks (each toilet block having 1 toilet and 2 urinals).

Waste Management:

  • Over 3000 population covered under waste management

  • 730+ families and 162 students benefited from drum system for collection of plastics waste

  • Conduction of village cleanliness campaign

Drinking Water:

  • Provided piped water to the needy areas 

  • Repaired water tanks

  • Restructuring of existing water supply with participation from villagers and gram panchayat

  • 3000+ population from 10 padas have benefited till March 2020

Agriculture:

  • 364 Farmers helped to improve their production by supporting them with progressive agriculture

  • Training on rice cultivation techniques

  • Exposure visits to farmers

  • Formation of farmers groups

Capacity Building

  • NGO Capacity Building Program: 99 NGOs and 178 NGO staff / officials covered under program

  • Saksham: Capacity building of gram panchayat members and women leaders
